Family and Couples Counseling

What is Family and Couples Counseling?

Family and Couples Counseling is a form of psychotherapy that considers the behaviors and interactions of all involved individuals and the ways in which these behaviors and interactions influence and affect not only individuals, but families and couples as a whole. Sometimes, treatment is divided between individual session time and also spent on family or couples session time, or both. This type of psychotherapy focuses on communication, coping skills, constructive problem-solving, and ways to build trust and strengthen healthy relationships. Family and Couples Counseling tackles personal issues, such as struggles related to separation or divorce, parent and child conflict, financial stressors, behavior concerns in children and adults within the family or couple dynamic, and more.

Benefits of Family and Couples Counseling:

  • Development of healthy boundaries; Family and Couples Counseling provides an educational and supportive environment in which to recognize, become comfortable with, and set healthy boundaries within the family or intimate relationship dynamic.

  • Improving communication; Family and Couples Counseling allows for individuals and members of relationship dynamics to communicate effectively and in a healthy manner.

  • Identifying and defining roles within a relationship; knowing the roles of yourself and others allows for boundaries to be set and ensures that everyone is able to perform their roles at their peak potentials.

  • Addressing dysfunctional interactions; Family and Couples Counseling allows all individuals to identify, discuss, and handle inappropriate, unhelpful, or otherwise dysfunctional interactions between family members or partners.

  • Improvement of problem-solving skills; Family and Couples Counseling helps individuals identify problems and discuss and explore solutions that are effective in healthy and beneficial ways for all.
